Nerd vs Geek

I was recently called a nerd, now I am going to have to defend my self I'm a Geek, not a Nerd.

A  Nerd refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests that are age inappropriate rather than engaging in more social or popular activities. Therefore, a nerd is often excluded from physical activity and considered a loner by peers.
Where as a Geek is a person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media. Geeks are adept with computers, and treat the term hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves.

Damm it, I just realised I'm both... Why does that make me smile

Leo Laporte Slams Telstra

Leo Laporte has just got back from a trip to Tasmania and it seems that he has now heard of Telstra and what they get up to. Here is a few of the quotes from the show, I'll try my best not to mis quote him,

The quote below was taken from MacBreak Weekly 85 and he talks about the download limits offered by Telstra. Having a quick look at the ADLS2 page for Telstra I have to agree.
This is on a min 12month contract and assumes you have a Telstra full service fixed phone line (otherwise add another $10)

  • 59.95 - 600MB
  • 89.95 - 12GB
  • 99.95 - 25GB
  • 149.95 - 60GB

I feel so sorry for the people in Australia, Telstra, which was owned by the Australian government and has been kinda privatised, although the government still owns half of it, is absolutely applying gready and it's kinda stunning. There are competitors but they are all small players, I mean when you have a government run Internet service provider and telco it's kinda hard to compete against them and Telstra's very anti-competitive. You know if you want to be an ISP and you want a DSL switch in Telstra's offices they make it very difficult for you. But you know what they do, they have very low data caps, like 500 megabytes in a month 500 MEGABYTES

The pricing above was taken from the above web page on 19 April 2008 and what they are charging is outrageous.

That quote was taken from the just after the 28min mark in the show if you just want to listen to that.

Football

Yesterday the 3rd's had their first match and I'm glad to say that we had a win. This is the team that I have been training with since the beginning of the year. I am a long way from being ready to play but I still had a run in the 9 a side before the match.

My tipping isn't going to well, last week I only picked 4 and I am on my way to do the same this week, so far I have picked 3 of the 5 games that have been played.

Training....

So before I headed to training tonight I was laying on the couch thinking, I am tired, I don't want to go, maybe I can just skip this one.

Of coarse I was reminded last night that joining the local football team has it's advantages. I was shopping last night, normally a lone task (unless Gwen comes along) and I bumped into a mate from the team. He asked where I have been and why I wasn't at training on Tuesday (I was in Melbourne) and we had a bit of a chat about the tipping.

You see the good side of this is that I now know a lot more people in the community, the bad side, if I am to lazy to go to training I'll get asked about it next time I go outside.

I headed off to training thinking that it'll be good for me to work off some of those beers from the weekend and you know what. I had a great night, so much energy and after I feel great. I look back onto my first training session with the Red Lions and I can't believe how far I have come.

Thanks guys :-)

Ever Tried to Leave Facebook?

Here is an interesting article about the difficulties that some people are having when trying to leave facebook
“It’s like the Hotel California,” said Nipon Das, 34, a director at a biotechnology consulting firm in Manhattan, who tried unsuccessfully to delete his account this fall. “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”
