Leo Laporte has just got back from a trip to Tasmania and it seems that he has now heard of Telstra and what they get up to. Here is a few of the quotes from the show, I'll try my best not to mis quote him,
The quote below was taken from MacBreak Weekly 85 and he talks about the download limits offered by Telstra. Having a quick look at the ADLS2 page for Telstra I have to agree.
This is on a min 12month contract and assumes you have a Telstra full service fixed phone line (otherwise add another $10)
- 59.95 - 600MB
- 89.95 - 12GB
- 99.95 - 25GB
- 149.95 - 60GB
I feel so sorry for the people in Australia, Telstra, which was owned by the Australian government and has been kinda privatised, although the government still owns half of it, is absolutely applying gready and it's kinda stunning. There are competitors but they are all small players, I mean when you have a government run Internet service provider and telco it's kinda hard to compete against them and Telstra's very anti-competitive. You know if you want to be an ISP and you want a DSL switch in Telstra's offices they make it very difficult for you. But you know what they do, they have very low data caps, like 500 megabytes in a month 500 MEGABYTES
The pricing above was taken from the above web page on 19 April 2008 and what they are charging is outrageous.
That quote was taken from the just after the 28min mark in the show if you just want to listen to that.

Hey there, Leo Laporte was referring to HSDPA (Wireless) through Telstra, which being in Tasmania, was really his only high speed option. He may have slammed it, but he didn't take into account the fact we have less than a tenth the population of the US with similar land mass.
The US is way behind in HSDPA implementation, Telstra have one of the most advanced HSDPA networks in the world, along with Singapore, up to 7.2Mbps currently, with 14.4Mbps with future upgrades, covering 98% of the population. They spent over $1 billion on this network. Telstra are expensive because of the coverage and speed they offer, that no other network in the world does.
Aww, my girlfriend loves leo! She met up with him in San Fran this year!
